The Origins of Our Legacy

The journey of Università Cattolica began in 1921, sparked by the vision of Father Agostino Gemelli and a group of dedicated Catholic intellectuals including Ludovico Necchi, Francesco Olgiati, Armida Barelli, and Ernesto Lombardo. Together, they envisioned a Catholic university that would play a pivotal role in shaping Italian culture. Despite initial challenges, the foundation for this vision was laid in February 1920 with the establishment of the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute of Higher Studies, marking a significant milestone with the support of Benedetto Croce, the then Minister of Education, and Pope Benedict XV. This momentous beginning was not just a victory for the Catholic movement but a beacon for the entire Italian ecclesial community.
