Health service

If you are a national from either a EU Member State or an EEA country or of Swiss nationality, you should have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) Italian acronym: TEAM, obtained in your home Country from your national healthcare authority. The European Health Insurance Card ((EHIC) will allow you to receive medical treatment in another member state for free, or at a reduced cost. The patient will be charged for prescriptions, medical examinations, oral and dental care.

Non-EU residents must purchase International Health Insurance protection to cover any cost related to medical treatment and/or admission to hospital.

Please refer to Waitaly (https://www.waitaly.net/en/) for further details. The cost is of €74 for 6 months or €125 for a year. Higher levels of cover are also available.

Once in Italy, you can register to the SSN (National Health Service) at the local Health Unit (ASL), by paying € 150 fee (subject to change) for one calendar year (1 January – 31 December). You will get your personal healthcare card and choose a family doctor in Piacenza.

Note: Medical cover is compulsory when applying for the residency permit.

If you are staying in Italy for more than 90 days, you must go to a Post Office (see details below) within 8 days of your arrival in Italy (or any other Schengen country you’ve gone through preceding your arrival in Italy), in order to collect the Yellow Kit (Residency Permit application forms) to apply for a Residency Permit (which is a living permit).
