Reinventing student life en route to Beijing
A young student challenges herself to learn one of the most unique languages in the world and embarks on an unusual journey discovering a passion for a new culture and way of life in Beijing as a Double Degree student at Università Cattolica. Roberta Lazzeri, who comes from the small town of Valdidentro in the Northern Italian region of Lombardy, is the first Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore student to do a Double Degree at Beijing Language and Culture University in China (BLCU). Università Cattolica Double Degree programmes offer its students the possibility to obtain a double qualification by the end of their studies and a chance to study part of the degree course in a partner university. Roberta chose to follow the Double Degree in Languages for Business course with particular regard to the Chinese language. However, Roberta recognised that she did not want to study only languages and when she found the Languages for Business course at Università Cattolica which combines economics with language learning, she knew it was the perfect fit for her. When Roberta arrived in Beijing, bags, luggage, and uttermost grit in hands, like many who leave home for a new country, she experienced culture shock, “China is a very different country compared to Italy. Despite the struggles of the pandemic, Roberta has officially completed the Double Degree programme at Università Cattolica and BLCU with a thesis on the life and business of Chinese entrepreneur Dong Mingzhu, whose story she found particularly inspiring.
Alumni The Rector, Franco Anelli, has recently visited Cattolica Alumni in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, where the first American Alumni community has now been created. Double Degrees Università Cattolica’s effort is to offer its students new possibilities for the internationalization of their academic path. That’s why Cattolica has just signed two Double Degree agreements: one with The University of Western Australia, for the Master’s degree in Management, and one with Thomas Jefferson University for our School of Medicine. Cooperation projects Università Cattolica has been awarded funding for three projects launched by the 2019 Erasmus Plus program. Secondly, the More Opportunities for Every Child (MOEC) project led by Cattolica’s Centro Studi sulla Disabilità e Marginalità (CEDISMA). Confucius institute The Confucius Institute at Università Cattolica turns ten! 180 courses, 6,000 language certifications and more than 100 conferences: these are some of the achievements reached by the Confucius Institute thus far, and the best is yet to come. Following the recent renewal for ten more years of the agreement between Università Cattolica and the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban), its Vice Director, Ma Jianfei has defined the Confucius Institute as “the best cultural bridge between China and Italy.”.

As previously stated, internationalisation should be viewed as a cross-cutting dimension that encompasses all aspects of the university's operations. What is the importance of formally recognising international experiences in the student's curriculum? Recognising international experiences is essential for promoting internationalisation and providing students with the skills and competencies needed to succeed in a globalised job market. By promoting internationalisation in higher education, we can prepare students and faculty for success in an interconnected world and promote the development of skills and competencies needed to succeed in a globalised job market . Beatrice is working for the TV show “Homeland” as a Travel and Accommodation Coordinator. Beatrice began her career when she didn’t know what to pursue after graduating high school. This led Beatrice to study Media Sciences and Technology for her undergraduate degree and pursued a Master’s degree in Communications for Enterprises, Media and Complex Organizations at Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. It was never part of the life plan there, but there it was!” Even after Bones wrapped up for its final production, Beatrice was still on cloud nine to had worked with her favorite TV show. And who wouldn’t if offered a job for the TV series “Game of Thrones?” But just when the deal was about to be finalized, Beatrice received another call.

They come out of connections, of what could have been and will be. Bianca had the idea of making “ Galia ,” from the place that for her was the most beautiful of all: family. Bianca established Galia in 2020, a sustainable online family business founded in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Motivated by her grandmother and with the help of her mother, Bianca took off with Galia. With dedication, Bianca chooses the designs that she will put on the shells and with soft brushstrokes adds golden touches to the edges to turn an oyster into a beautiful craft, inspired by the meaningful gift from her grandmother. For Bianca, this became more than just a new business, for Bianca this project “…created a special bond with my grandma and my mother, it got us closer.”. Exploring a new city, and learning new ways to create, communicate and innovate constitutes this project that’s still alive every day that Bianca walks out of her dorm door and heads to the Gemelli campus to continue her creative and learning journey in the city of Milan.

Ivan is 22 years old and studies Political Science with a minor in Criminal Justice at UNC Charlotte , which he will finish in December this year. Since Ivan arrived in Milan from Charlotte, North Carolina, he has traveled to Amsterdam, London, Munich, Florence and Cinque Terre. Not only because Obama was president back in that time, but also because Ivan got one of the best compliments of his life, that stimulated him pursuing his goal. During his high school time in Charlotte Ivan attended a private school for a year, but spent most of his grade school tenure in public education. Ivan thought that the guy was bluffing, but few days later the guy invited Ivan for dinner at their house, because his father wanted to meet Ivan. Getting lessons of confidence with Ivan when living abroad One should walk like he owns the place, says Ivan.
Dictionary Dreams to Medical Reality: Elena's Inspirational Voyage
Through her experiences, Elena showcases the power of embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity. Given her multicultural background, Elena experienced some challenges blending in while growing up. Going to Rome to study at Università Cattolica's 6-year Single-Cycle MD in Medicine and Surgery helped her in the process of understanding herself. Elena, despite not enjoying being in the spotlight, chose to confront this challenge by immersing herself more in Università Cattolica’s community . Elena never believed she would be the person to achieve this, and as she started to become more active in the medical community, students from Asia started contacting her about how to enrol and become a part of this exciting experience. As Elena shared her deep love for medicine, she remembered a special present from her parents: a dictionary given to her as a little girl. Upon returning to Rome to obtain her degree in Medicine and Surgery, Elena came back with a completely different mindset.

I have been living in Los Angeles since September 2015. What do you do for work in the USA? I work in the Creative Marketing department of Oliver Peoples Group , part of Luxottica. When did you transfer to the USA? I worked in Italy for two years as a project leader for events, meetings and conferences, and then moved to Los Angeles. I arrived in Los Angeles with the intent to specialize in marketing, by attending a 15-month post-graduate program at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) . After 9 months of full-time courses, I started a paid internship at Oliver Peoples. Did you undertake a study abroad experience with UCSC International? In 2012 I studied in Texas for 5 months with the International Student Exchange Programs (ISEP) . What do you love the most about your life in the USA? First and foremost, I love the weather here in Los Angeles.
Toward Internationalisation for All
Then, Marina suggested a course to her Vice-Rector and thus, the idea of SUCTI was born - a course at home in the language of the institution, aimed at raising awareness of internationalisation among administrative staff outside international offices. Moreover, the administrative staff often lacked the means or were too bound by daily responsibilities to experience mobility and internationalisation abroad, but they were just as important representatives of internationalisation as the other stakeholder groups. While most higher education institutions in the questionnaire had a strategy for internationalisation and almost two-thirds of them provided training for all administrative staff, only 27% provide training in internationalisation for all staff, 18.4% for some staff and 12.3% for few staff members. Realising that the administrative staff is in fact the backbone of any university and that they are often the silent agents of internationalisation, the SUCTI founders aimed to change this perspective and systematically address the administrative staff of universities in the process of internationalisation over a three-year period. SUCTI objectives The main objectives of SUCTI were to raise awareness of internationalisation among administrative staff outside international offices and to help institutions enhance management, governance, and the identification of training needs. Development of the activities According to the needs and objectives set out at the beginning of the project, SUCTI provided the administrative staff of various universities around Europe, including Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, with knowledge, skills, and tools related to their university’s internationalisation process. CHEI and internationalisation at Università Cattolica At Università Cattolica, the SUCTI project was conducted under the supervision of the Centre for Higher Education Internationalisation (CHEI) headed by Professor Amanda Murphy.

Marcus has authored a best-selling book, For The Culture: The Power Behind What We Buy, What We Do, and Who We Want to Be, which examines the influence of culture on consumption and unpacks how everyone, from marketers to activists, can leverage culture to get people to take action. To counter this, she created the Barbie doll, which aimed to inspire young girls to believe in their limitless potential and Barbie has been a symbol of that for decades. This shift culminated in the release of the 2023 movie, Barbie, the perfect distillation of Barbie’s point of view about the world, and the cultural production that people who see the rules similarly to Barbie could use to communicate their own identity. That meaning is culturally mediated, therefore some people who identified with Barbie's message of empowerment saw the movie as a way to communicate their own identity. However, Barbie wasn't talking to those people who didn't “believe” Barbie’s worldview; Barbie talked to its “believers,” and those people took the brand and its work and used it to communicate their identity. For instance, when something great happens in Michigan, the University of Michigan will post something and people will take that post and share it to project their identity as a Michigan Wolverine, leaders and best, go blue, or Michigan difference.

After taking my Master’s Degree at Università Cattolica , I worked at Mediaset for 6 months as an intern, after that I moved to United States. I selected the Entertainment Studies Certificate because it was the most affordable option and it offered a lot of academic and working opportunities. I wanted to widen my knowledge in the entertainment industry, and I couldn’t have chosen any place other than Los Angeles to do that. What did you study at Università Cattolica? At the undergraduate level, I studied Communications and Political and Social Sciences. Then I undertook a Master at Almed in Design and production of audiovisual media for cinema, digital media and TV. What do you love the most about your life in the USA? The experience and knowledge that I’m acquiring in the entertainment industry.

Emilia works as a soccer coach at the Arsenal Soccer School and studies B.Sc. The kids get to learn a little bit of English too, because this is the idiom that Emilia gives them the instructions in. It's the moment when the kids learn, and when they say "listen to Emilia!" When the kids are happy, it makes Emilia happy too, she tells me. The first sport she learned was not soccer, but ringette, which she started practicing when she was about eight years old. So Emilia followed this track as well, and while attending middle school and high school she coached kids twice a week. Emilia spend one month in Valencia, Spain, with her friend, before coming to Italy. In June 2016, Emilia applied for Università Cattolica .
Dr Luz M. Longswort, University of the West Indies How did The University of the West Indies advocate online learning before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic? We began a project called The UWI Distance Teaching Experiment (UWIDITE), which was then transformed into the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) and from these we started with two blended degrees. The physical campuses, which account for about 40,000 students across four campuses had to go into rapid online emergency remote teaching. Another major issue with the students attending the physical campuses and the Open Campus students who were used to meeting at the sites is that lack of community. How has The University of the West Indies maintained the same quality of teaching since the beginning of the pandemic? Given that we were an official Open Campus, one of the things that we had established was a framework of policies that guide online and distance teaching. This academic exchange not only enriched the educational journey of Professor Ulloa and her students but it also exemplified the power of international collaboration in higher education. A Glimpse into Professor Ulloa’s Expertise Professor Ulloa brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in international relations, focusing on Mexican foreign policy, Comparative Politics, and International Cooperation. Teaching Collaboration at Università Cattolica’s Summer Programmes Before arriving in Italy with her group of 11 students, Professor Ulloa had the chance to choose two courses to co-teach with Cattolica’s faculty. Learning (and Remembering) from Your Students Reflecting on her experience, Professor Ulloa expressed immense gratitude for the warm welcome and support provided by Università Cattolica’s international office. EDUCatt is a non-profit foundation entrusted by Università Cattolica with the task of providing services related to the right to study in favour of students during their university career. Do international students generally use this psychological support service? Yes, and to facilitate their access to the service, we have a professional on each campus who can conduct the sessions in English and, where possible, in French. How would you describe the students arriving at Cattolica today, having experienced lockdown during their high school years? Generation Z faces its own set of challenges, but I would prefer not to speak of them as only isolated or suffering individuals. The University has also participated along with other universities in the call for the development of projects on psychological well-being , and we are waiting for the final approval from the Ministry of University and Research.

So I packed two coats, one leather jacket, four pairs of trousers, some shirts and pullovers, skirts and shorts, a cocktail dress and a pair of fancy shoes, scarfs, towel, bikini, flip flops, sandals, underwear. If you still have enough space, bring a carry-on suitcase – in case you need a little extra space... By the way: bed sheets and towels. Supported by the EU's Erasmus+ programme and in collaboration with eight partners from six European countries, the "Fashion &; Food Synergy for Sustainability" project delves deep into the crossroads of sustainability, communication, and cuttingedge technology. Emanuela Mora, Director of ModaCult , coordinates the Political and Social Sciences School , an undergraduate programme devoted to the communication management of food and fashion systems (COMMA) , where the first seeds of this innovative project was sown. We asked Silvia Mazzucotelli , a member of the ModaCult research team and co-coordinator of COMMA , about the inspiration for this project. She is an Associate Professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where she works at the Department of Sociology and focuses her research and teaching on the Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes . These models consist of a well-balanced combination of in-person sessions, collaborative online lectures, group work and independent study activities - all with the overarching goal of grasping the role of sustainability in the food and fashion industries. Looking ahead, Professor Mazzucotelli shared some ideas and thoughts: ModaCult envisions expanding the project's network and expertise by collaborating with additional universities and sustainable professionals.

Culture shock refers to the feelings of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people may experience when moving to a new country or experiencing new cultural surroundings (Segel, 2010). I, myself, am an international student, originating from England, and I have experienced culture shock whilst studying abroad. Culture shock will affect almost everybody who moves somewhere new; I’m sure you have heard about this once or twice. Culture shock is usually always portrayed in a negative light; however, it can have a positive impact on study abroad students. Similarly, in terms of personal identity, culture shock can also help you to better understand your values and understanding of the world . So, in a refreshing new light, I have composed two of the main benefits that I have discovered whilst enduring the stages of culture shock.
I went. I saw. I fell in love.
I drank cappuccinos with a side of chocolate brioche BUT only before 2 pm. I sat in the kitchen with my roommates for countless hours sifting through travel sites to book the most cost-efficient trips possible. And if you can’t relate, listen to a Noah Kahn song, I promise you’ll get the gist. I’d like to think that sometimes, it’s not always just the place that makes you fall in love but the people you experience that place with. And of course, there were moments during study abroad where I’d fall into a phase of homesickness. Thanks to Universita Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore, my host institution, I was able to live out my childhood dream. Cattolica’s international program allowed me to immerse myself in a world of culture I truly never wanted to leave and create the unforgettable memories that every study abroad student raves about when they return home. I fell in love with not only Italy, but the people I met, the university that hosted me, the surrounding cities &; countries, the incredibly unique cultures, and to be quite honest, I fell in love with life.
